Capital Area Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

President's Message

Josh Kleczynski, MS, RD, LDN

Welcome back Capital Area Dietitians! It seems like we were just finishing up the previous year and everyone was gearing up for summer. Before we know it, we will begin to see the leaves change and the holiday season will be all around us. As I reflect on my last four years involved with the Capital Area Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, my favorite program that we have facilitated is the National Nutrition Month Mobile Food Pantry in partnership with the Central Illinois Foodbank. Fighting the battle of food insecurity on the front line is something that our profession is so very grounded in. Although most of us do not typically work with community hunger, the very basics of the foundation of dietetics is to feed people, and we do just that each National Nutrition Month.

As September is No Kid Hungry Month, it seemed appropriate to have this as the topic of discussion. According to the Central Illinois Foodbank, nearly 30,000 Sangamon County residents are food insecure. According to a Springfield School District interview kicking off summer breakfast and lunch programs, an estimated 60-70% of Springfield School District 186 students also fall into this food insecure category.

If anyone attended the opening session of FNCE last October, Doug Rauch, former president of Trader Joe's, discussed his view on food insecurity such that there is an overall lack of essential nutrients, not a true lack of calories. This is likely an accurate representation of the Sangamon County Area. With access to food pantries, free lunch in Springfield Public Schools, and SNAP Monies, access to food is likely not the root cause of food insecurity for many.

As Dietitians, what can we do? Well - The Capital Area Academy has partnered with a local community organization to provide education to previously food insecure mothers and enable them to better utilize their resources. This will be an additional project that we will be looking for volunteers to spend time teaching these single mothers about food preparation and nutrition. This educational intervention will be the next step for us to have community representation as the nutrition experts in the Central Illinois Region! Stay tuned for more information at our first membership meeting. Looking forward to seeing everyone in a couple weeks!
